Kadov rocking stone
Rocking stones are large rounded stones located separately in meadows or forests and with only a small part lying on the bedrock.
You will be able to rock them just with a little force. The most well-known Czech rocking stone is the one located at the
south-eastern edge of the village of Kadov and hence the name Kadov rocking stone. It lies on a 1-meter high rock and it is
a medium-grained biotite granodiorite. Its perimeter is more than 11 metres and it weighs about 30 tons. In 1985 it was declared
a natural monument, but it attracted the attention of scientists already in the 19th century. The earliest records of the
Kadov rocking stone are from 1856. However, the stone did not attract only the scientist, but also stonemasons who carved
the wedge depressions into it, which would then break the stone. Thanks to the district governor, the stone was saved from
breaking. In 1893, the stone was moved by a group of enthusiasts from its original position by 1.5 meters. The stone was returned
to its original place only with the assistance of ing. Pavel Pavel, who is known for his studies on the movement of statues
on the Easter Islands. The return was carried out in 1983 by gradually placing round logs under the stone until the stone
was in its original position. However, due to vandals the stone did not stay in its original position for a long time, and
the attempt to return had to be repeated. There is a nature trail from the village of Kadov, called Nature trail Around the
rocking stone, which goes to the nearby village of Vrbno. There is also a hiking trail to the boulder in the southwest direction
from the town of Blatná. In the southern direction of the stone there is the Velká Kuš nature reserve, which is situated
on the west bank of the pond of the same name. There is also a number of ponds built in the north direction from the stone
and at the west bank of the Smylov pond you will find another nature reserve of Smyslovské louky. There are several cycling
routes in the village of Kadov, so you can also plan a bike tour. From the railway station in the village of Tchořovice there
is a hiking trail leading southward around the group of ponds and through the village of Vrbno westwards towards the rocking
stone.
